Under the Presidency of Sierra Leone, the Security Council held two signature events: • A high-level open debate on Maintenance of international peace and security (12 August), focused on addressing the historical injustice and enhancing Africa’s effective representation in the UN Security Council (S/2024/574). The President of Sierra Leone presided over the meeting. The Council heard briefings by the President of the General Assembly and the Secretary-General. • An open debate on Peacebuilding and sustaining peace (21 and 22 August), focused on the New Agenda for Peace – addressing global, regional and national aspects of conflict prevention (S/2024/581). The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Sierra Leone presided over the meeting.

Under the Presidency of the Russian Federation, the Security Council held two signature events: • A high-level open debate on Maintenance of international peace and security (16 July), focused on multilateral cooperation in the interest of a more just, democratic and sustainable world order (S/2024/537). The Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation presided over the meeting. • A debate on Cooperation between the United Nations and regional and subregional organizations in maintaining international peace and security (19 July), focused on the role of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (S/2024/538). The Secretaries-General of the three organizations briefed via VTC.
