Under the Presidency of the United States, the Security Council held two signature events on: •  Women and peace and security (3 December), a briefing focused on the transformative power of intergenerational dialogue and partnerships between generations of peacebuilders amidst the upcoming 25th anniversary of resolution 1325 (2000); and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Maintenance of international peace and security (19 December), a ministerial-level briefing presided by the US Secretary of State which focused on the implications of AI on international peace and security. The Secretary-General briefed.

Under the Presidency of the United Kingdom, the Security Council held three signature events on:  •  Sudan (12 November), a briefing presided by the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office;  •  the Middle East (18 November), a ministerial-level briefing presided by the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs;  •  Ukraine (18 November), a ministerial-level briefing presided by the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs. Under-Secretary-General DiCarlo of DPPA briefed on behalf of the Secretary-General.

October 2024

Under the Presidency of Switzerland, the Security Council held two signature events: A high-level briefing on Maintenance of international peace and security (21 October), focused on anticipating the impact of scientific developments on international peace and security (S/2024/708). The Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland presided over the meeting. A high-level open debate on Women and peace and security (24 and 25 October), focused on women building peace in a changing environment (S/2024/709). The President of the Federal Council of Switzerland presided over the meeting. In addition to the signature events, the Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland presided over a high-level open debate under the item “The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question” (29 October, which resumed on 30 October). The Secretary-General provided briefings under the items “The situation in the Middle East” (2 October) and “Reports of the Secretary-General on the Sudan and South Sudan” (28 October), respectively.

Under the Presidency of Sierra Leone, the Security Council held two signature events: A high-level open debate on Maintenance of international peace and security (12 August), focused on addressing the historical injustice and enhancing Africa’s effective representation in the UN Security Council (S/2024/574). The President of Sierra Leone presided over the meeting. The Council heard briefings by the President of the General Assembly and the Secretary-General. An open debate on Peacebuilding and sustaining peace (21 and 22 August), focused on the New Agenda for Peace – addressing global, regional and national aspects of conflict prevention (S/2024/581). The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Sierra Leone presided over the meeting
